Childhood memories 4 - Pontiac. (Digital download - 2042 x 2732 pix)
The mountains felt like a brief escape from the reality we were living. While war raged in Beirut, my family hid in the south of Lebanon, trying to stay safe. One day, my brother Samer, just 16, decided we needed a break. He packed all seven of us into his used 1980 Pontiac, hoping a trip to visit our relatives in the mountains might bring some relief.
This painting reflects that day – the winding roads, the deep greens of the landscape, and the Pontiac that somehow held us all. The brushstrokes are loose and textured, mirroring the wear of the car and the weight of the journey. Light dances between the trees, as Fayrouz’s voice played softly from the radio, filling the silence between us.
The drive was supposed to take two hours, but the Pontiac kept breaking down, turning it into six. Samer stayed calm, driving us forward. This painting is a tribute to his quiet determination, the hope we carried as a family, and the small moments of peace we held on to in the midst of war.
